GERD stands for Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease. "Gastro" refers to the stomach. Esophageal refers to the esophagus , the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach. Reflux means a back-flow. GERD is a condition in which acid, bile and partially-digested food in the stomach goes back and up into the esophagus. What happens when a person has GERD? Partially digested food contains a strong acid including powerful enzymes that break down food. The stomach lining has a special protective layer against acid attack but the esophagus is not protected so when acid and enzymes come in contact with the esophagus, they cause irritation, inflammation, pain, and other symptoms. GERD can be brought about by a weakness in the Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES) . The LES is located at the very bottom of the esophagus and is a high pressure zone made up of muscles. The LES normally opens or relaxes as food is moved down the esophagus to the stomach. When it is closed, the LES prevents the food and digestive juices from going back into the esophagus. For some reason, the muscle in the LES weakens and GERD results.
In about 80 percent of people with GERD, they have a hiatal hernia which makes heartburn and other symptoms more likely. A hiatal hernia occurs when part of the stomach bulges into the chest cavity through a weak normal opening in the diaphragm, a sheet of muscle that separates the stomach cavity from the chest cavity.
